U.S. Senator Claire McCaskill Joins Third Way

Comes Onboard as Honorary Vice-Chair

Washington: Third Way announced today that Missouri Senator Claire McCaskill has joined the group as an Honorary Vice-Chair.

Said Third Way President Jonathan Cowan: “In just a short time, Senator McCaskill has made her voice heard on vital issues relating to government oversight, national security, the economy and other matters of great importance to this country. We are honored and delighted that this dynamic new national leader has agreed to serve as one of our Honorary Vice-Chairs.”

Serving for only three months, Senator McCaskill already has made a mark in Washington. Among many other things, she is a co-sponsor of the “Middle Class Opportunity Act of 2007,” which would provide tax relief for middle class families balancing work, caring for children and parents, and saving for college and retirement. The bill is modeled on the tax cut package that she presented during her campaign, which Third Way helped develop.

Senator McCaskill said in a statement: “On the issues I care about, like making government work better, Third Way has provided a real service. They have helped to devise creative and effective new approaches to 21st century problems. I am glad to be joining their leadership team, and I look forward to continuing and expanding my work with Third Way.”

Senator McCaskill, who worked as a waitress for six years to help pay her way through college and law school, is a former prosecutor, state legislator and state auditor. In November 2006, she was elected as the first woman to serve as a U.S. Senator from Missouri, vowing to bring Harry Truman’s no-nonsense style of accountability back to Washington.

She sits on five Senate Committees, including Armed Services, Commerce, Homeland Security and Government Affairs, Aging, and Indian Affairs. Senator McCaskill was also selected to sit on the Permanent Subcommittee on Investigations, formerly known as the Truman Committee.

The other two Third Way Honorary Vice-Chairs are U.S. Senators Ken Salazar (CO) and Mark Pryor (AR). Senator McCaskill replaces Senator Mary Landrieu (LA). Third Way’s Honorary Co-Chairs are Senators Blanche Lambert Lincoln (AR), Evan Bayh (IN) and Tom Carper (DE).
