A Note to AGS Visitors

Close

Americans for Gun Safety (AGS) and the AGS Foundation (AGSF) have been folded into Third Way, an organization founded and operated by the former AGS and AGSF management team.

For Third Way’s latest gun safety policy and message guidance, please visit our gun issues page. There you can also find reports produced by AGS in a special sub-category.

For current gun safety data and other information, we recommend the American Hunters and Shooters Association, the Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence, the Coalition to Stop Gun Violence, and Mayors Against Illegal Guns.

About Us

Third Way is a non-profit, non-partisan think tank. We are advancing a 21st century progressive agenda by working with elected officials, candidates, and advocates to create policies and market those ideas in the public debate. Since our launch in January 2005, Third Way’s work on security, economics and culture has been used widely by progressive leaders and our impact noted extensively in the national media, including in The New York Times, The Washington Post, The New Yorker, Newsweek and on the NBC Evening News, The Today Show, Good Morning America, NPR and dozens of other outlets.

Programs

The National Security Program: Third Way is helping to build a credible, tough and smart progressive national security agenda. We have devised policy and communications strategies that many progressive leaders are using to frame the debate; we released a major Third Way study laying out the Bush defense failures at a press conference with Senator Reid, Rep. Hoyer and others; we helped write legislation to increase the size of the Army that was introduced by Senators Clinton and Reed; and we produced user-friendly national security issue briefs and trained dozens of candidates on our policy proposals and messaging.

The Culture Program: Third Way is developing new progressive approaches to cultural issues. We conducted original policy and communications research on immigration that now forms the core of the progressive approach; we drafted a report and held a press conference with Senator Schumer and Rep. Emanuel exposing the failure of the Bush Administration to enforce the immigration laws; we pioneered a new approach on abortion that is embodied in legislation sponsored by pro-choice and pro-life House members; and we developed new culture issues for progressives, including a bill combating Internet pornography introduced by a dozen Senators and featured on network news shows.

The Middle Class Program: Third Way is designing a new economic agenda and narrative for the 21st century. In 2006, we developed a diagnosis of the progressive economic disconnect from the middle class and then presented those findings to twenty Senators at a caucus lunch. We also briefed every major Senate candidate and many House candidates on our middle class policies and strategies. We devised a middle-class tax agenda that has been adopted by five new Senators. And our economic insights have been hotly debated on progressive blogs and in news stories.

Leadership

Our senior_team has decades of management, policy, political, communications and non-profit experience, including service as a federal agency Chief of Staff, presidential campaign communications director, Senate policy director, White House deputy and non-profit director, in addition to having founded three national advocacy groups. Third Way is also led by a prominent private sector Board of Trustees, drawn from finance, industry, academia, the non-profit sector and government.
